SKA (Sunday Kool Activities!) Our SKA program is offered Sunday mornings, during worship, for JK to Grade 8. Families gather in the sanctuary at the beginning of worship. The children leave for SKA after a blessing and the Passing of the Peace. We gather, as a whole group in the gym for offering, and sharing of any SKA news. We break off into 5 groups (roughly based on age: JK/SK, Gr 1/2, Gr 3/4, Gr 5/6, & Gr7/8), and travel to the day’s activity centre. Our model for program delivery is rotational. For six weeks we have the same Biblical theme, or story. During the first five weeks the children are shepherded to a different centre each Sunday. They experience and participate in the story from many viewpoints, often through storytelling, games, art, outreach projects, and eating (of course!). On week six we celebrate our learning experiences with the whole congregation through an intergenerational worship service, complete with contemporary music. During past years the SKA units of experiential learning and celebration have included:
We have continued to use Cornerstones curriculum, with modifications. An overview of this curriculum can be viewed at www.cstones.com. A project that all worked very enthusiastically on, was our Peace Pole and Peace Garden. We invite you to drop by and take a moment or two to rest and reflect on our pole’s saying, “May Peace Prevail On Earth”. Outreach continues to be a large part of our focus during our SKA time. Our projects in past years include:
B.A.D. (Being And Doing) for God B.A.D., our high school age youth meet every Sunday morning during worship. We also have at least one monthly evening activity. This past year we kicked off with a Pizza Party. We moved over 2 million candies for Operation Christmas Child (all in one morning!!!). We enjoyed games nights, Laser Quest, movie nights/wakeovers (sleepovers), and a great “Steal-a-Present” Christmas Party!. Our group also sorted food at the Waterloo Regional Food Bank, and serves dinner at Oasis (local drop-in centre, for those in need). This past season we had an awesome retreat at Camp Ganadaoweh, went caving at Mt. Nemo, and wrapped up the year at Down and Dirty, at Five Oaks. The youth are also integrally involved with many of the SKA (Sunday Kool Activities) intergenerational worship services, and SKA’s weekly program (known as Sunday School to the outside world). Impact 7/8 (Grades 7 & 8) Impact 7/8 meets once a month on Friday evenings for games, crafts, snacks, and outreach activities. This past season we had great outdoor games nights, went bowling, tobogganing, and had a wild night at Laser Quest. We made blankets for the Linus Project, delicious candy treats for Oasis, and had fun making our own snacks too! We had an evening with our older youth, as they shared their mission trip stories and pictures, of their adventure to Guatemala. We wrapped up the season with an overnight camping trip to Lake Huron.
